We all age – that is just a fact of life!
During natural aging, the skin begins to get thinner and we have a slower turn-around in generating new skin. Also, as we get older the volume in our face decreases and wrinkles, lines and folds start to form. Think of the smooth roundness of a child’s face. We are all born with a natural volume of facial fat that we naturally lose over time. This loss of fullness can lead to sagging skin, wrinkles, and hollows in the face.
Volume is lost in many areas of the face as we get older. The areas that lose volume include; the cheeks, the brow, and the lips. As the cheeks sag and lose volume, they descend from their usual high position in the face near the eyes, to a lower position. This leads to the formation of nasolabial folds (the folds from the corners of the nose to the mouth), oral commissures (the folds just beneath the corners of the mouth), and then jowls ( the skin that sags beneath the jawline). This leads to a more square appearance to the face. Volume can also be lost in the brows, which exposes the upper orbital rim, giving the face of more skeletal appearance.
Conversely, a youthful face resembles the shape of an upside-down triangle, a line through the eyes forming a base, and the chin forming the point of the triangle.
Studies have demonstrated that volume loss of soft tissue and bone is at least equally important to facial aging.
There are two important substances that make up healthy and youthful looking skin: collagen and hyaluronic acid. Over time, collagen and hyaluronic acid diminish. At around age 30, collagen begins to break down – we see this on our faces as our skin loses structure and volume, causing wrinkles, fine lines, deep folds and even a hollowed appearance.
There are many additional factors that contribute to the speed of this process such as heredity and sun exposure.
To restore facial volume, facial fillers can be used. Facial fillers may treat:
-vertical lip lines
-declining lip volume
Facial fillers such as Juvederm® , Radiesse®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, and Perlane® can replace lost structure and volume. These fillers are injected just below the surface of the skin to add volume, and in this, smoothing unwanted lines and wrinkles. The new thinking in facial rejuvenation focuses on using a combination of these procedures to address the multiple manifestation and the underlying reasons for aging.
All fillers are not the same! It is important to work with a Board-certified dermatologist to select the correct filler product for you, and to have it applied in the correct area of the face, using the precise and professional injection technique for that area.
