What is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma, also known as PRP, is a treatment that utilizes the healing power of your own body to stimulate cellular regeneration and collagen production. Platelet rich plasma PRP works by drawing a small amount of your blood in a blood sample, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets, and isolating the portion rich in growth factors. When injected or applied topically to the skin, PRP injections can promote wound healing, improve skin tone and texture, reduce fine lines, and even stimulate hair follicles for hair growth. At K Derm & Rejuvenation Institute, we use advanced techniques to deliver PRP therapy in a safe, comfortable setting, offering patients a way to refresh and renew their appearance.

PRP Treatments

PRP as a Filler Alternative

In certain cases, PRP injections can serve as an alternative to dermal fillers, making them a good option for individuals who have allergies to fillers or want to experience potential results before fully committing. More often, though, PRP is combined with dermal fillers to help enhance and prolong their effects.

PRP for Hair

PRP therapy is commonly used to address hair thinning and early hair loss. By injecting concentrated platelets directly into the scalp, PRP can stimulate dormant hair follicles, improve hair density, and encourage healthier, thicker hair growth without surgery or medications.

PRP for Under-Eyes

For the under-eye area, PRP offers a natural way to reduce dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines. The growth factors in PRP help to boost collagen and improve skin quality, creating a more refreshed appearance in an area where traditional fillers may not always be ideal.

PRP for Acne Scars

In treating acne scars, PRP can significantly improve skin texture and tone. By stimulating new collagen formation and encouraging skin regeneration, PRP helps to soften the appearance of pitted scars and promote a more even complexion over time.

Candidates for Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

PRP is ideal for individuals wanting to rejuvenate the skin, treat early signs of aging, reduce scarring, or improve hair density. It is beneficial for patients who want to avoid more invasive cosmetic procedures. Candidates typically include those with dull or uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, or mild hair thinning. Because PRP is derived from your own blood cells, it is generally safe. During your consultation, our providers will assess your skin or scalp condition and determine if PRP treatment or platelet rich plasma injections are the right fit for your goals.

Preparing for PRP Injections

Preparing for PRP is important to ensure optimal results and enhance healing. Patients are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, blood clotting-affecting medications, and certain supplements (like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil) for a few days prior to treatment. If you receive PRP with  laser therapy, our team will provide detailed instructions based on your custom treatment plan. We also recommend arriving with a clean face or scalp, free of lotions or makeup, to maximize the effectiveness of your session and support the healing process.

The Platelet Rich Plasma PRP Procedure

The procedure begins with a blood sample. The sample is then processed in a specialized centrifuge to isolate the PRP, which is rich in growth factors, white blood cells, and red blood cells, depending on the formulation. Depending on your treatment plan, the PRP may be injected into the skin, or used in targeted areas of the scalp for hair restoration. Most treatments take about 45 to 60 minutes and are performed in-office. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, and numbing cream can be used to enhance comfort during facial applications.

Results and Recovery from Platelet Rich Plasma Injections and Therapy

Results from PRP develop gradually as collagen and tissue regeneration take place. Most patients begin to notice skin texture, firmness, and brightness improvement within a few weeks, with continued improvement over the next several months. Hair restoration patients may notice reduced shedding and increased fullness over time. Since PRP injections work using your body’s natural regenerative abilities, little to no downtime is required.
