Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

Skin Cancer Awareness

May is Skin Cancer Awareness month.  Dr. Kormeili was honored to guest post for mAss Kickers Foundation. mAss Kickers is a nonprofit that empowers survivors (and their friends/family) with knowledge, a fighting attitude, and a supportive community.

Eric Galvez, the Founder and CEO, asked Dr. Kormeili for her expertise because melanoma is an incredibly frightening type of cancer, one that can affect otherwise healthy individuals. And too many young people lose their lives to this cancer unnecessarily.

The Statistics Are Devastating

To begin with more that 3.3 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year according to SkinCancer.Org’s website. That makes skin cancer the most common form of cancer in the United States. Luckily, it’s also one of the most preventable forms of cancer and it is highly treatable with early detection.

This is why skin cancer awareness, education, detection and treatment is a primary concern for Dr. Kormeili and our dermatology staff. Dr. Kormeili provides patient education about skin cancer, and you can read more skin cancers and how melanoma rates have doubled.

“ABCDE” Signs Of Melanoma

We encourage you to please spend some time getting informed about the signs of melanoma (look for the “ABCDE” . Check it out- here’s more info on what those are and the warning signs.

Also, if you haven’t already, get that beautiful skin checked and make sure your loved ones do as well.  Education and monitoring for melanoma is half the battle!
