Surgical Scars Can Be Minimized, Find Out About Treatment Options

Treatment Options For Surgical Scars

Considered about surgical scars? We understand and you’re not alone. When you see as many skin cancers as we do, you end up doing many skin cancer surgeries. Despite the best surgical skills, a surgical scar is inevitable. Despite their relief from being cancer free, most patients want to know how they can minimize their scars after the surgery.

According to a new article, Botox can be used at the time of the surgery to improve the appearance of facial surgical scars.

This study showed that “injection of botulinum toxin type A (Botox) immediately following wound closure improved the appearance of facial surgical scars.” Therefore, early intervention might improve the quality of surgical scars.

Additional studies have also shown that Botulinum toxin type A (such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin) have been shown to improve surgical scars in the past decade. This study demonstrates that early post-surgical botulinum toxin injections can produce better, narrower, and flatter facial surgical scars.

Our Proactive Approach To Surgical Scars

We offer our surgical patients a comprehensive approach to the entire treatment. Additionally, spend a great deal of effort in reducing the appearance of scars. By offering patients a personalized post-surgery treatment plan that may include, creams, injections, lasers or other technologies we can help improve the appearance of the scar.

Dr. Kormeili believes that there are three steps to each skin cancer treatment procedures:

  1. Step 1: Remove the cancer. Whether it is excisional surgery or Mohs surgery, the cancer needs to be removed and re-evaluated under the microscope.
  2. Step 2: Closure of the wound. Once the cancer is removed there is a “hole” from where the cancer used to be. Placing the scar within skin lines and moving tissue around to close the defect is an art! We use a combination of dermatology and plastic surgery to ensure the best results.
  3. Step 3: Scar Care. We offer a comprehensive and personalized approach to each patient for their unique surgical scar, including Botox for facial scars.

Above all, we pride ourselves in being able to screen, detect, diagnose and treat skin cancers, and save lives every day.
