Hair Transplants for Different Hair Textures

What Are Hair Transplants?

Hair transplants are the result of a surgical process that removes hair follicles from a part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to a hairless or balding area of the body, usually the scalp, which is called the ‘recipient site.’ This method is used primarily for treating androgenic (male or female) pattern baldness.

A study published in 2016 confirmed that people were perceived as younger and more attractive by casual observers after undergoing a hair transplant. Participants in this study also rated posttransplant faces as more successful and approachable than their pretransplant counterparts. These aspects have been shown to play a substantial role in both workplace and social success and demonstrate that hair transplants can improve patient’s quality of life universally.[1]

Types of Hair Texture

Oprah’s hairstylist, of all people, created a classification system for hair texture called the Andre Walker Hair Typing System. His system classifies hair into four different categories with their own sub-categories:

  1. Straight
    1. Fine/Thin
    2. Medium
    3. Coarse
  2. Wavy
    1. Fine/Thin
    2. Medium
    3. Coarse
  3. Curly
    1. Loose
    2. Tight
  4. Kinky
    1. Soft
    2. Wiry

Any texture can be transplanted. However, hair that is on the curlier and kinkier side can be a bit more complicated to transplant. The good thing about curlier hair is that your doctor will be able to provide more coverage with fewer follicles.

What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular unit extraction is a method of performing hair transplants where follicular unit grafts, consisting of a small number of hair follicles, are individually removed from the scalp’s stronger areas and artistically restored to the thinning areas. FUE has many advantages, including a small donor wound, less pain, and a slender graft without extra surrounding tissue.[2] Studies have shown FUE can be an effective hair transplantation method for a select patient population who suffer from severe baldness or have inadequate scalp donor reserve.[3]

At the Derm & Rejuvenation Institute, Dr. Zandifar utilizes the sophisticated NeoGraft device to minimize downtime with virtually no scarring.

Personal Consultation

One of Dr. Kormeili’s and Dr. Zandifar’s philosophies is that the patient is the top priority of every interaction. They enjoy interacting with their patients and takes great interest in getting to know all the details of their lives

During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Zandifar will discuss your goals and expectations for your hair transplant, and she will devise a treatment plan customized to you and your hair texture

Preparation

In preparation for your procedure, you will want to:

  • Quit smoking a day before surgery
  • Not drink alcohol three days before surgery
  • Not get a haircut
  • Avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications for two weeks

Procedure

Your surgeon, Dr. Zandifar, will design your new hairline, and each of your harvested follicular units will be carefully implanted in this new layout. The newly implanted hairs will grow over the next few months and eventually will look just like the rest of your hairs

Recovery

There is no significant recovery for hair transplants, and most patients can resume daily activities right after the procedure.  However, for about a week afterward, the new hair area should be treated delicately.  Carefully treating them will allow the new follicles the time to establish their blood supply and take root in their new location. After around ten days, most normal activities can occur; however, there are some limitations to activities such as going to a spa or vigorously rubbing or scrubbing the hair.  After one month, no other care needs to be taken.

Results

The newly transplanted hair may seem frozen in time and can need a few months to resume growth, but usually, at the end of a month, the new hair will start to grow and continue to act like normal hair.

Results are usually seen between six and nine months after your procedure. For some, it can take a year. It’s essential to know that between two and eight weeks after the surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out. This is normal.  By the third month, the hair may look thinner than before, but again, this is normal.

For the best results, Dr. Kormeili may recommend a medicine that treats hair loss. Medicine can prevent or slow down new hair loss and thinning so you can keep your natural-looking results for years to come.

Complementary Procedures

PRP Hairloss Treatment

PRP Hairloss treatment is a method of restoring hair using Platelet Rich Plasma to accelerate healing in the body. The PRP is derived from the patient’s blood and encourages hair growth in treated areas.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a process where unwanted hair is heated with laser light pulses to stop new hairs from growing.

Botox

Botox is an injectable neuromodulator that relaxes the facial muscles to flatten lines and wrinkles to create a more youthful appearance. Great for both men and women.

CoolSculpting
